LBT INSTRUMENTS FOR FIRST LIGHT

The following facility instruments should be available on
LBT around the time of "first light" (with one 8.4m primary mirror).

WFPFC - Wide-Field Prime Focus Camera

Location : Prime focus
Scale    : 0.26 arcsec/pixel
FOV      : 25 x 25 arcmin
Detectors: 4 2k x 4k EEV CCDs
Blue camera: UB optimized (QE ~ 90% at 400 nm)
Red camera : VRIJ optimized (QE ~ 90% at 900 nm)
Limiting magnitudes (5-sigma):  U~25.5, B~27, V~26.8, I~25.5 mag in 12 min exposure and 0.6 arcsec seeing.


MODS - Multi-Object Double Spectrograph

Design : Modular dual-beam blue/red optimized spectrograph
Location: Straight-through f/15 Gregorian
Modes: Direct imaging, longslit, multi-slit/aperture, IFU (optional)
Scale: 0.26 arcsec/pixel in imaging mode
FOV: 4 x 4 arcmin; 5 x 6 arcmin with poorer but satisfactory image quality
Coverage: 320-1100 nm, blue channel: 320-600 nm, red channel: 500-1100 nm
Resolution: 2000-8000
Spectrograph throughput: ~20% @ 320 nm, 50% @ 500 nm, ~50% @ 650 nm, 
~45% @ 800 nm, ~30% @ 900 nm, ~10% @ 1000 nm

and Integral-Field Unit for Extragalactic Research

Design: Modular NIR imager and spectrograph
Location: Bent f/15 Gregorian
Modes: Seeing and diffraction limited imaging and longslit spectroscopy,
seeing limited ultiobject spectroscopy, diffraction limited IFU spectroscopy (optional).
Scale: 0.015 - 0.25 arcsec/pixel with 3 cameras
FOV: 4 x 4 arcmin (seeing limited), 0.5 x .05 arcmin (diffraction limited)
Coverage: 0.9 - 2.5 micron (NIR)
Resolution: 5000-10000 (seeing limited), 21000-37000 (diffraction limited)
Limiting magnitudes (5-sigma, 1 hour): Seeing limited: J=19.8, H=18.8, K=18.4
(resolution = 5000); Diffraction limited: J=22.3, H=21.1, K=20.6.

LBT INSTRUMENTS FOR SECOND LIGHT

The following "strategic" instruments are under development and should be available on
LBT around the time of "second light" (with both 8.4m primary mirrors)

Interferometric beam combiner for visible and near infrared

Location: Combined f/15 Gregorian Focus
Design: optical bench beam combiner and visible/NIR science package
Modes: Imaging with Multi-conjugate adaptive optics 
Angular resolution: 5 milliarcsec (at 0.5 microns)

Interferometric beam combiner for near and thermal infrared

Location: Combined f/15 Gregorian Focus
Design: cryogenic beam combiner with thermal and near infrared science packages
Modes: Fizeau Imaging and Nulling Interferometry 
Angular resolution: 20 milliarcsec (at 2 microns)
