The Large
Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO) at the University of Arizona
seeks candidates for the position of Large Telescope Operations
Scientist. The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) represents a major
advance in astronomical research capabilities. The LBT will be the
largest, most powerful optical/infrared telescope in the world. LBT
adaptive optics systems will provide diffraction/limited-imaging
capability with the resolution of a 22.8-meter telescope. The Large
Telescope Operations Scientist will operate the telescope and its
instruments in order to facilitate the collection of astronomical
data. The position will report to the LBT Mountain Operations
Manager. The position is based in Safford, AZ, with duty station at
the LBT Observatory on Mt. Graham, at an altitude of 10,500 ft. The
position involves shift work at night.

- Assimilates
observing program requirements and executes telescope operations for
observing runs, which includes operating computers and consoles and
monitoring the computer screens and various readouts.
- Confers with scientists and engineers to define observing
procedures and supports the collection of scientific data through
the operation of state of the art large telescopes which contain
complex computer networks and technologically advanced features such
as multiple primary mirrors, multi-axis articulated secondary
mirrors, and Alt-Az coordinate systems.
- Maintains observing weather station, monitoring wind velocity,
humidity and amount of dust present; decides if weather conditions
permit safe operation of the telescope.
- Controls access to the observing floor and telescope, ensuring
that a certified observer is present or connected remotely.
- Inspects premises to identify situations potentially dangerous or
injurious to personnel or equipment; makes real-time decisions
regarding operation of the telescope facility and its protection
from adverse conditions.
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to
telescope or sub-systems; notifies appropriate personnel of
malfunctions of equipment.
- Performs computer diagnostics related to the use of the telescope,
active optics and associated electro-optical systems following
documented procedures.
- Maintains operations logs which include weather, safety and
equipment malfunction information.

B.S. degree in
Astronomy, Optics, Engineering or related field AND five years of
experience with state of the art research or related
instrumentation; OR,
Ten years of experience operating telescopes which includes five
years of experience with state of the art large telescopes and
research or related instrumentation; OR, any equivalent combination
of experience, training and/or education.
