The Large Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO) at the University of Arizona is looking for a Principal Engineer, Electrical or Mechanical.

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) represents a major advance in astronomical research capabilities. The LBT will be the largest, most powerful optical/infrared telescope in the world. LBT adaptive optics systems will provide diffraction-limited imaging capability with the resolution of a 22.8-meter telescope. Its unique binocular design and state-of-the-art optics technology provide opportunities for innovative engineers to expand their experience beyond typical applications.

The successful candidate will become part of the LBT Engineering Group. We are seeking a multi-disciplinary senior engineer, capable of leading complex technical projects from requirements through implementation and commissioning. Candidates should have an engineering degree in electronics or mechanics. Previous experience in large telescope projects is required. The selected candidate is expected to compile commissioning plans, lead telescope commissioning activities, and actively contribute to problem analysis and solving, as well as telescope performance optimization. Previous experience with Adaptive Optics, Active Optics and/or closed loop systems is valuable. Although the position is based on the U of A campus, the incumbent must be available for practical problem solving and extensive commissioning activities at the telescope site at an altitude of approximately 10,500 feet on Mt. Graham, Safford, AZ.

Project activities in which participation may be expected include design reviews, risk assessments, vendor bid evaluations, and project readiness reviews. The candidate must be capable of developing procedures for testing, installation, commissioning and startup. Posiiton reports to the LBT systems engineer.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and retirement plans, life insurance, disability programs and investment plans, paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; tuition reduction for employee and qualified family members and access to UA recreation and cultural activities.

As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, the University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
- Plans and executes commissioning of telescope subsystems. Commissioning will be carried out on site with support from Tucson and Mt. Graham staff.
- Develops standards, conventions and documentation and directs technical personnel in implementing designs and documentation.
- Directs technical personnel in implementing designs for telescope control and related systems, mirror support and image processing systems.
- Telescope commissioning lead.
- Telescope engineering support for pointing, tracking and active optics testing.
- Interfaces with a wide variety of scientists. These interactions include scientists, engineers at LBTO, Steward Observatory and other LBT partner institutions.
Not applicable for this position.
B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
Demonstrated design experience in major telescope projects, or other comparable large projects; minimum is 5 years.
- M.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Demonstrated design experience in major telescope projects, or other comparable large projects; minimum is 10 years.
- Experience with formal commissioning procedures and documentation.
- Ability to gain rapid comprehension of new material related to the LBT project.
- Good verbal and written comunications skills (English language) and the ability to work as part of a team.
The University of Arizona conducts pre-employment screening for all positions, which includes verification of academic credentials, licenses, certifications, and work history.
